Wellness, Well-being and Being
I recently read that there is an initiative amongst some health and spa leaders to focus on wellness (health) rather than well-being (happiness and emotions). This gave me pause. Half a century ago, the concept of a mind-body connection didn’t even exist, not to mention such a nuanced distinction between wellness and well-being. In fact, when the first research study by Dr. Robert Keith Wallace on the Transcendental Meditation technique was published in Scientific American in 1972, it rocked the scientific community.

You Must Rest
Australian cartoonist Michael Leuning offered a profound insight regarding modern life when his cartoon character Mr. Curly declared:

Tiredness has become the most suppressed feeling in the world. Everywhere we see people…

When I think about nature, I think about my childhood, which was spent constantly out-of-doors. As a family we were campers, picnickers, hikers. If we could do anything outdoors, we did.
I grew up in New Mexico where nature was as intimate to our daily life as our own selves. Unlike life in an apartment building in a city, where the…

Women, Wisdom and the World
Last February, seventeen women students at Maharishi University of Management (MUM) gathered for a special course called “Women, Wisdom and the World.” Taught by Leslee Goldstein, Ph.D., and Percilla Herrera, the two-week course focused on the role of women historically, in the present, and in a more perfect future.
One of the unique features of MUM is that the students practice the Transcendental Meditation technique twice daily, which has been …

Awakening Spiritual Life
When my father was a young minister and doctoral student in the Boston area, he would listen to weekly radio broadcasts by Howard Thurman, the first African American chaplain at Boston University. Later, my father described to me the clarity and calm in his voice, as if each word was a pearl on a string.
My father considered Thurman to be one of the greatest individuals he knew. He explained that Thurman’s life was devoted to cross-cultural…
