Everything Comes from Nothing

Stephen Hawking, the man often considered to be the most intelligent person on the planet, wrote a book detailing the origins of the universe. In a passage excerpted in the Times of London, we read:  “Because there is a law such as gravity, the Universe can and will create itself from nothing. Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing, why the Universe exists, why we exist.”

If something is created out of nothing then nothing has to move–it has to change and become something. If something comes from nothing—and there are many many somethings in the relative universe—I conclude that everything comes from nothing. Nothing must therefore be a field of infinite potentiality, an unending field of self-referral energy, intelligence and creativity.

Physics is the branch of science concerned with the nature and properties of matter and energy and the relationship between the two. It includes the search for and examination of subtler states of matter and energy. While exploring these finer states, physicists were bound to come upon a reality beyond matter and energy—in modern physics, this is known as the Unified Field.

The term unified field theory was coined by Einstein, who was attempting to prove that electromagnetism and gravity were different manifestations of a single fundamental field. Unified field theory is sometimes called the Theory of Everything: the long-sought means of tying together all known phenomena to explain the nature and behavior of all matter and energy in existence.

Some Unified Field physicists claim a connection between the unified field and consciousness. Theoretical and empirical investigation reveals that the unified field is fundamentally a field of consciousness. The fundamental qualities of the unified field—intelligence, dynamism, and self-awareness—are the defining characteristics of consciousness.

Extensive published research demonstrates that we can directly experience the unified field in the most expanded state of human awareness, known as ‘pure consciousness’ and is marked by the onset of global EEG coherence and increased alpha power, indicating maximum orderliness of brain functioning and utilization of the total brain.

Nature is Nature whether you comprehend it through scrutiny by the intellect or experience it directly in your own consciousness.

The understanding of how the universe is created is already well expounded by the great seers of the ages. For example, in the Vedic tradition, the description of Nothing is the same as the modern scientific one. It is called Being, Absolute, and pure consciousness. Vedic literature states that Being lies beyond the subtlest state of all that exists in the world of change—being neither matter nor energy—simply a state of pure existence and the source of all creation and evolution. It is in essence Absolute complete Knowledge—the source of all the display of relative life—and can be accessed at the deepest level of anything including within our own mind.

The mind can intellectually understand the concept of cosmic law and how the universe comes into being, but it is the direct dive of the mind into its own nature of Being that is most confirming of this reality. During the Transcendental Meditation technique, the mind transcends—goes beyond—concrete levels of thought to subtler levels of the thinking process and settles effortlessly inward beyond thinking to experience pure consciousness, ones innermost self. As a result, our daily life has more energy, creativity, happiness and harmony.

In his book, The Science of Being and the Art of Living, Maharishi defines Being as “the basis of life, that which gives it meaning and makes it fruitful… It is eternal truth. It is the Absolute in eternal freedom.”

It turns out that experiencing Nothing is the basis of experiencing everything.
