Preventing Physician Burnout

A new article published in Western New York Physician states that the medical profession is showing increasing interest in the Transcendental Meditation technique for prevention of burnout.

Last month Dr.Robert Schneider, dean of the College of Integrative Medicine at Maharishi University of Management, was invited to speak to 200 doctors and medical students at the University of California at Irvine where the medical school is considering implementing courses on the TM technique.

Dr. Schneider explained the role of stress in cardiovascular disease and the research that shows that the Transcendental Meditation technique prevents or treats many of the factors that contribute to heart disease, such as high blood pressure and atherosclerosis. ”Physician burnout is now recognized as a major issue,” Dr. Schneider said. ”The residents and medical students were keen to stay balanced and healthy as they train in the science and art of medicine.”

Medical professionals also understand that stress contributes to aging by shortening the telomeres on the ends of chromosomes and are now learning that the Transcendental Meditation technique helps to repair these telomeres. With more than 400 published studies showing the benefits of the TM practice, physicians feel secure about not only suggesting the TM course to patients but about learning for themselves. Another article on the new study Transcendental Meditation Reduces Compassion Fatigue and Improves Resilience for Nurses was published in Western New York Physician (Rochester & Buffalo Issue Vol 2, 2018: pages 15 & 16) by Amy Ruff, RN BSN.
